THE CONTINOUS CURVE

Project by Pavel Semchenko (AKhE Theatre) and Maxim Didenko, St. Petersburg
Участник программы «Маска Плюс» Фестиваля 2010 года
Director: Pavel Semchenko, Vadim Didenko

Set designer: Pavel Semchenko

In the new performance of a well-known St. Petersburg theatre about the absurdity of
human existence two people are locked in small space, they interact with each other and objects, but their actions have no practical sense, and the more intensive are their interactions, the more ridiculous becomes the general situation, the greater the loneliness of the two bewildered beings. Maxim Didenko and Pavel Semchenko say that the performance was inspired
by Stoppard’s play “Rozenkrants and Gildenstern are dead”, but it makes us recollect
“Waiting for Godot” and other absurdist works, trying to express the doom of the human mind before the unknowable reality.

At the end of the performance the actors put on survival spacesuits and distractedly wave to the audience, while we hear the voice of the Soviet radio announcer, declaring the space flight of the first living beings, dogs Laika and Strelka.

There is a short-run bulb above them; there are objects to establish a special dialogue with reality around them. A bottle with liquid nailed down to the table, a glass broken in a hand of the madman tied to the chair, an operating console with a small quaky antenna, tiny dolls waving their arms in despair. Forgotten and of no practical use things spend a life full of events that is dependent on actor’s imagination and at the same time chaotic at its randomness.
