THE COW

School of Dramatic Art, Moscow
Director - Dmitry Krymov

A story by Andrei Platonov lies at the basis of Dmitry Krymov’s new theatrical composition The Cow. Like in the other productions of this artist-director, the literary primary source is not the object of scenic research, but rather a springboard for the director’s imagination. But unlike The Demon, where practically none of Lermontov's words are used, and unlike the productions based on Chekhov, where only fragments or citations remain of the author’s text, in The Cow not only a significant part of Platonov’s text is preserved, but also the plot-line. In other words, there is a narrative, which was missing in Krymov’s previous scenic exercises. The imagination of the creators of The Cow (the productions is, as always for Krymov, composed by joint effort) develops an independent plot, which ultimately does not illustrate the text, nor does it exist separately; rather, they are superimposed on each other, creating a whimsical scenic counterpoint.
