Edinburgh Fringe in Moscow

The Edinburgh Fringe in Moscow Festival was held in Moscow from 26 May until 5 June 2008. The project was conceived and carried out by the Golden Mask Festival in cooperation with the British Council in Russia and with support of the Federal Agency for Culture and Cinematography and the Moscow Government. Sberbank of Russia acted as General Sponsor of the Festival.

The programme of the Edinburgh Fringe consisted of three British productions, which were presented within the framework of Edinburgh Festival Fringe in the summer of 2007; two productions by Russian theatres that took part in the Edinburgh Festival Fringe at different times; the reading of five plays by playwright Mark Ravenhill; seminars and discussions on British theatre and the theatre system.

A round-table devoted to the Edinburgh Fringe as aesthetic and socio-economic phenomenon was held during the Festival. Managing directors and artistic directors of Russian theatre festivals as well as representatives from the Edinburgh Festival and the British Council were invited to participate in the round-table.

The Edinburgh Fringe in Moscow programme included discussions of performances and readings with specialists, theatre and arts students and spectators. The theatre critic Marina Davydova curated the programme.
